Can Houdini Achieve the Ultimate Escape?

Composer Andy Kirshner and jazz drummer, Mike Gould, will soon premiere a new piece for live percussion, electronic sound, and video that continues the paranormal research of the legendary magician, Harry Houdini.

It turns out that the great conjurer spent the last ten years of his life investigating and de-bunking the psychic powers of various “spirtualists” around the world, and he even promised his beloved wife that, once dead, he would try to contact her from “the other side.”  Wife Bess waited for ten years before concluding that  communication with the dead was impossible.  But Kirshner and Gould haven’t given up so easily!

In this mixture of jazz inflected polyrhythm, electronic wizardry,  and neo-Victorian shenanigans, the duo sends its percussive soundings to the spirit of the legendary prestidigitator.

Will Houdini respond?

Obviously, you’ll have to come to the show to find out!  (And don’t forget your Ouija board.)

The work will premiere on a March 26, 2007 concert at the Video Studio of University of Michigan Duderstadt Center. Stay tuned to this website for some sonic sneak previews of spirit rappings, percussive tappings, and mysterious electronic voice phenomena.
